Whale-watching cruise
Located on the southern coast of New South Wales, Jervis Bay is home to migrating humpback whales. The Jervis Bay Whale Watching Cruise offers guests the chance to see these creatures up close and personal.
Humpback whales are able to grow to up to 15 metres in length. They can weigh up to 48,000 kg. They migrate from Antarctica to warmer waters off the coast of Australia. The migration starts in May, and ends in November.
During the humpback whale migration, whales tend to rest on the calm waters of Jervis Bay. They then travel north along the east coast of Australia. On the southern migration, multiple sightings are common.
The best time to go whale watching in Jervis Bay is during the winter. This is when the number of fur seals is at its peak.
Cave Beach
Located on the southern side of the Booderee National Park, Cave Beach is a popular spot for surfers and families alike. It has a large sandy beach and a tall rocky cave at the western end of the beachfront.
It is also an excellent site for seeing native Australian wildlife. There are many kangaroos at the beach and they are often seen walking casually on the sand. The bay is a great place for safe swimming and snorkeling.
If you are into surfing, Cave Beach has a large wave pool and you may be lucky enough to catch a ride. There are gas barbecues and a sheltered picnic area.
The nearby Huskisson pub is a local landmark and is a great place to stop for a drink and some good food. The views of the water from the pub are stunning.
Whistling with the whales
During the annual migration, humpback whales travel from Antarctica to the warmer waters off Australia’s east coast. These whales use whistles to communicate with each other. They are also able to modify their whistle characteristics in response to changing noise levels.
However, these changes may not be well understood. There are a number of variables that contribute to a change in the structure of a whistle, including the duration of the whistle, the number of frequency modulations and the inflection point. In addition, there are behavioural and geographic factors that can affect whistle structure.
Using acoustic recordings from 2016 to 2018, whistles were analysed in the upper Chesapeake Bay. Two sites were deployed offshore of Ocean City, MD, while another was deployed in the upper part of the Bay.
Stand up paddleboarding
